Chapter Five

Silence. Tess studied the faces of her children. She wasn’t certain what she saw brewing behind their eyes. Relief? Fear? Sadness? She was relieved when Dani spoke.

“So, Brooke is gonna be home because she wants to spend time with us?” Dani asked.

“That’s basically the nuts and bolts of it—yes,” Brooke said.

“But you’re with us all the time,” Dani said.

Dani’s observation took Brooke by surprise. How did a twelve-year-old define “all the time?”

“Except when you work,” David said.

“I’d like to have a little more time to spend with you,” Brooke explained.

David looked at Tess. “You’re not sick, right?”

“I’m not sick,” Tess replied.

“But what happens if you are?” he asked.

“Are you asking me what happens if I’m pregnant or what happens if I get sick?” Tess asked.

He shrugged.

“D,” Brooke addressed him. “There’s no reason to think Mom will have the issue I did.”

“Yeah, but what if she does?” he asked.

“There are always risks,” Tess said. She noted the surprise on Brooke’s face. “There are. There are risks to everything. But I don’t have any reason to think I will have problems delivering a healthy baby. I managed the two of you,” she reminded him.

Dani sniggered. “You’re still a pain,” she told her brother.

He wrinkled his nose.

“We won’t know for two weeks if we’re expecting another baby,” Tess told them. “And then, we’ll wait to tell most people until the baby is a little bigger. Just like we did with Ethan.”

“See? Because you could get sick!” David said.

“We went through this before,” Brooke said. “Mom will be okay.”

“What about Grandma?” Dani asked. “She’s gonna die, isn’t she?”

There was never an easy way to tell someone that death would come sooner rather than later. “Yes, Dani. But that could be months or more away.”

“Yeah. But it could be like tomorrow, right?” David asked.

“I don’t think it will be tomorrow,” Tess replied. “Grandma is feeling good most days. So, let’s hope she and Grandpa accept our invitation to visit for your birthday.”

“Grandma should move here,” David said.

“Why do you think that?” Tess asked.

“Because we have doctors.”

“They have doctors in Florida,” Brooke said.

“Yeah, I know,” he replied. “I mean you. And Grandpa and Gram.”

“We’re not exactly the kind of doctors that treat your grandmother’s type of sickness,” Brooke said.

“Yeah, but you know stuff. And none of you will be working, so—”

Tess hid her smirk behind her hand. Her children’s logic continued to amuse her. Stuff?

“I just think they should,” David said. “And Grandpa can bring his boat.”

Tess lost all hope of maintaining her composure. She laughed so hard she nearly fell off her chair. Three sets of eyes looked at her like she had lost her marbles. “I’m sorry,” she managed through her laughter.

“Would you like to let us all in on the joke?” Brooke asked.

Tess cleared her throat. “Sorry.”

“Are you okay, Mom?” Dani asked.

Tess fell into another fit of laughter.

Brooke looked at the twins. “Unless you have anything you need to ask, I think we’re done.”

Dani and David both pushed out their chairs and made their way toward the stairs.
